Today was the day of our church picnic. This was our seven year old's first time to work. He thought he was a big man helping Daddy out. Logan, however, stayed with his aunt while we worked. I was asked where my "little one" was at. I told them he was at Nana's. I was thinking to myself, "Talk about a bull in a china shop. No way!!!!! He so could not handle this. SENSORY OVERLOAD. I would spend the whole time chasing his little butt." Of course, I know some people don't know he has autism. Even then, they might not know a lot about it. My dad was one of those people. I called him the day we got the diagnosis. If you know my dad, just get the mental picture. I called and told him it was autism. He said,
"What's that?" How do I explain it to him? I had no idea. He asked if that explained him not talking and other things. I told him probably. He asked me if Logan would ever talk. I might have been crying, I am not sure. I said to him. " I don't know Daddy. He may and he may not. Some kids never talk." What he said next I don't think I will ever forget. He said, " It doesn't matter. We are going to love him anyway, whether he talks or not. Didn't they tell you when you brought him home from Louisville (he was sick) that he was your miracle baby?" Yes, they did. He says, "Okay then we are going to love him no matter what." I was speechless. Was that really my dad? That was Wednesday. That Sunday after church we went to Mom and Dad's. He hands me a stack of papers he had read since Wednesday. They were all about autism. His employer's wife had printed them off the Internet for him. Thank God for her!! Okay, back to the picnic. Today my sister brought him over as we were finishing up. I ended up walking him around because he was into everything!! They had one of the bouncy inflatable things for kids. He saw it and dragged me to it. It was so funny because he did not jump. He wanted to sit or lay down and feel the motions. Fulfilling a sensory need? He has several, trust me! On rough days I try to remember how hard Logan fought to survive. Now it is our turn to fight even though it may not be easy. Sorry for the rambling and getting off subject. God bless to everyone.
