Meet the Teacher
Well, tonight was meet the teacher night at Logan's school. I had met her once already at his transition meeting. Tonight I actually had a chance to talk to her. As I was walking in the school, I saw a girl on the ground throwing one heck of a fit because she did not want to go in. I also saw a wheelchair and so I figured she was going to be in Logan's classroom. As I was walking up the sidewalk, I saw a couple of people turning around and staring at the mom and girl. They had the "can't you handle your kid" look. At least what I call it. I was thinking to myself as I was walking into school, " I wonder how many times I have gotten that look? " Logan has thrown plenty of fits when we've been out somewhere. So I am sure I have gotten it also. I felt sorry for the mom because I knew how she felt. I went on in and found his room and teacher. Sure enough I was right about the girl. She is in Logan's room. She is older and has an issue besides autism. The mom was really nice. Since there are all ages of kids in there I wasn't sure how it worked. His teacher said they will figure out what he can do and then work on what he doesn't know. I was telling the teacher that they gave us an autism and mental retardation diagnonsis. I am not sure about the mr part of the diagnosis. The teacher then said something that made me feel good. She said that sometimes you can't go by those tests. That is almost like they are boxing them in and limiting their potential. You never know what they can do until you push them to try. That made me feel good. It tells me she will not try to limit him and will try to maximize his potential. It will be a whole new ballgame for him, no doubt. Hopefully, the start won't be too rough. One more day to go! God bless and wish Logan and I the best of luck.
